Random Networks in a Distributed Computing Environment: An Approach to the Transmission Dynamics of Epidemic Diseases

Random networks are emerging in epidemiology as a way of simulation more realistic random contact behaviours. A network is a set of nodes representing individuals. Labels or properties may be assigned to each node, for instance, age, sex, state respect to disease (susceptibility, infection, recovery, etc.). Nodes are connected by ties that represent disease transmission paths. Once the network model and the disease evolution rules are stated, it is possible to simulate the evolution of the network over time and study the effect of disease on the population.

Moreover, random networks provide an easy way of modelling those scenarios where it is required the monitoring of the specific individuals, the design of single or combined vaccination strategies or to control and apply therapies in chosen target groups, something difficult to achieve in continuous models. However, essential aspects in epidemiology like the model fitting with data in order to obtain the transmission rate of a disease in a specific region turns out to be highly complex in computational terms (requiring for an average desktop computer several weeks, months
or even years of calculation time) whereas it is an issue with some valid approaches in continuous models which are able to solve the model in an affordable quantity of time.

In this paper, we present the description of a computational system following the paradigm of distributed computing, which will allow the estimation of parameters in random network epidemic models. This paradigm consists of a server that delivers tasks to be carried out by client computers. When the task is finished, the client sends the obtained results to the server to be stored until all tasks are finished and then, ready to be analysed.

A network model for the short-term prediction of the evolution of cocaine consumption in Spain in the next few years

Cocaine consumption is a social problem with acute consequences and its dependency can be regarded as a health concern of social transmission. This fact leads us to develop the idea that its transmission dynamics can be studied using epidemiological mathematical models. Under this point of view, in this paper we propose a network model to study the short-term evolution of the cocaine consumer sub populations. The model parameters are obtained from data source and from an analogue continuous model. Sensitivity of the model parameters is studied. The parameters are associated with prevention and treatment policies and the sensitivity study gives us information about which parameters have more incidence on the future evolution of consumers. Results and discussion are also presented.

Stochastic network modelling of the pressure of extreme groups in a society

Extreme behaviour is produced by small groups but their actions have an impact in a large amount of people. The fear is the strategy developed by these groups to influence the decisions of the whole population in order to achieve their political goals.

The understanding of the transmission dynamics of such a type of extreme behaviours increases the knowledge of the mechanisms behind the evolution of cultural norms and values. Moreover, it can give us tools to know their evolution a priori, eventually disappearing or getting their objectives.

In this paper we propose a stochastic network mathematical model to study the ideological evolution of a society where an extreme group is present. The model is applied to a real situation. The parameters of the model are fi tted to real data and parameter sensitivity analysis is done using confidence intervals in order to find out what is the eff ect in the change of people’s ideology the changes in the model parameters.
